Reduce and offset your carbon emissions
We can all play a positive role in addressing climate change – save energy, harness the power of renewable energy, consider the footprint of what we buy and consume, and travel less and more sustainably. See Friends of the Earth’s top tips to help climate and nature for ideas. Measuring your carbon footprint can help you to develop targets for improvement. On the positive side, offsetting your carbon emissions contributes to projects such as forest protection, reforestation or renewable energy initiatives. However, it is not universally viewed as a practice without pitfalls and shouldn’t take the place of carbon reduction.
Carbon calculators vary in what they cover and costs; there are a multitude of offset options in the marketplace. Included here are options linked to some of the conservation charities featured in this resource. The best option is to contribute more to help safeguard nature – environment causes attract only c.4% of philanthropic funding.
Forest Credits by Rainforest Concern
Carbon calculator and forest-based offsetting for individuals and organisations
Rainforest Concern’s Forest Credits is a not-for-profit carbon offset programme. The programme’s first project is the Neblina Reserve, in North West Ecuador. This cloud forest reserve is part of a larger plan, the Choco-Andean Corridor Project, to create a biological corridor in one of the most biodiverse regions of the world. Forest Credits aims not just to offset carbon but also to protect endangered habitats and species; the important water regulation and storage the forest provides; and the local communities who rely on them.
Forest Credits are independently assessed and audited in line with IPCC methodologies. The Forest Credits website includes an easy to use carbon calculator to work out your carbon usage.

World Land Trust – Carbon Balanced
Carbon calculator and offsetting for individuals and organisations.
World Land Trust – Carbon Balanced, a carbon offset programme, prioritises protecting and restoring threatened habitats such as forests, grasslands and wet peatlands and avoiding the release of stored carbon. World Land Trust works with local partners – currently in Guatemala (third party verified VCS-CCB standard) and Vietnam.
